BioRC Specimen Processing & Testing Unit

Overview of Services

Our Mission:  To process, store, test and distribute precious bio-samples following best practices.

Our Goal: Enable support for both ongoing research and future studies by providing biospecimen processing, testing, storage and shipping capabilities.  Provide the highest quality biomaterials, specimen services, technical consultation and logistical support.

Our Vision: To deliver high-quality specimen processing, research-based clinical testing, and biomarker discovery services that preserve sample integrity and advance translational research.

How We Operate: We operate on a project-by-project basis, supporting Investigator-Initiated, Divisional, and Center-based IRB-approved studies as well as clinical trials. Our team provides specimen processing and research testing services aligned with study-specific protocols to ensure quality and consistency. To discuss your project needs or explore how our services can support your study, contact Richard Tustin at tustinr@chop.edu

Biobanking projects must align with institutional principles and be reviewed by the BioRC Operational Committee (BOC*). Our team can help guide you through that process.

In addition, we offer fee-for-service support—including blood fractionation (serum, plasma, and PBMC isolation), clinical trial specimen processing, and research testing—which does not require BOC approval and can be initiated directly with our group.

Services (By project)

Sample Tracking and Processing

  • Enterprise LIMS system (Nautilus)
  • Laboratory Data Management System (LDMS)
  • Clinical trial specific data management systems
  • Labeling and tracking with barcoding (1D & 2D) and scanning systems.
  • Tracking and storage of all sample derivatives.
  • Blood fractionation.
  • PBMC isolation and cryopreservation.
  • Bodily fluids processing (CSF, Mucosal, Urine).

Sample testing

  • Clinical tests for research purpose.  We use several IVD (in vitro diagnostics)-qualified instruments to provide clinical tests for research purpose.  These tests include Complete Blood Counts (CBC), HbA1c, clinical chemistry (e.g., CMP, lipid panel, Na, creatinine, etc), and clinically-relevant immunoassays (e.g., CRP, Cystatin, insulin, Vitamin B12, PTH, cortisol, etc).  CBC and clinical chemistry assays can also be used for animal studies.  We also perform special assays like blood ABO typing, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), etc.
  • Biomarker discovery.  Our "ELISA Center" and PCR-based Gene Lab test protein and gene biomarkers that are not provided in the clinical setting.

Shipping

  • IATA certified shipping for samples processed in the BioRC-SPTU

 Sample Storage

  • Dedicated and customized storage.
  • Temperature monitoring and redundant alarm systems.
